Ariadne's Thread

Because she loved Theseus so much, she helped him escape the Minotaur’s maze with a very magical string woven, not of red fleece as the legend says, but of gold and iridescent fibers to help light the way. Charms, beads and totems are woven into the thread, which is knotted at intervals, to create an aura of protection about Theseus.

‘Tis the Season….

For the seasoning!

I am appalled that I’ve never before used fresh nutmeg – and equally astonished at how perfectly gorgeous this little, plain brown…. nut… can be so beautiful inside.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?

Abominable Snowman

Why, the Abominable Snowman, of course! I’ll bet you didn’t know their preferred method of entry was down the chimney!

Lynx, Meet Hibiscus

Sneaking in under the wire tonight. I was in bed, but the restless insomniac in me got back up. I figure it’s better to do something productive than lay there frustrated, right? (And, you know, I only have to be up in another 5 hours.)

We were inundated with lynx spiders this year, among other, more nefarious types. This one decided my hibiscus plant was the perfect place to lay her egg sac. Watching her was amazing: she laid the sac in the middle of the leaf, then using some super, extra strong silks, actually hemmed the leaf shut around the sac. If I happened to touch the plant, she would either charge towards me or move quickly to straddle her sac. Amazing and unexpected behaviors!

Lynx, Meet Hibiscus

You can just barely see her on the web – she was right below the egg sac when this was taken. It was so windy that I wasn’t able to get a good shot of the sewn-up leaf.

Our Statures Touch the Sky

Skyscape
We’d never know how high we are, till we are called to rise; and then, if we are true to plan, our statures touch the sky.

Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.

As I lay me down to sleep, this I pray: that you will hold me dear. Though I’m far away I whisper your name into the sky, and I will wake up happy.

Vintage Love

A detail from a vintage train case that I’m rehabbing – in a few days you’ll be able to read all the details over on my other blog, Silver & Chalk. (But don’t let that stop you from checking it out now!)

Love Portraits

Bronx, the dog who will not show his face to the camera….

Draya, the snuggler – even if she has to perform body contortions to do it.

He’s loved her since the day she was born.

Mmmmm, cider.

It’s apple season in Michigan! The day we arrived, our friends whisked us off to a local cider mill – where they served not only hot cider but cider slushies. And donuts. If I could start every day with a cider slush and a donut, I’d be happier than happy.

I loved these crates – if I could have packed one away to bring home I would (they would have made the perfect bookcase). Many of them also still had the labeling tags on them – and one or two had their “picked by” tags. Those quickly explained the presence of the SuperMercado back in town. 🙂
